These two studies appear to show different results regarding the effectiveness of Open Chest Cardiac Massage (OCCM):

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/27537507

Is there any decent review study that has tried to evaluate this further?

I'm also confused, couldn't the patient be put on bypass when using EDT/OCCM, to buy more time to restart the heart? Or is there never enough time to do so, in these cases?

  • Both of the studies you cited looked at traumatic arrests, which have dismal survival rates regardless of the resuscitation method used. (Only 4 survivors out of 38 patients in citation #1 makes that clear.) I think you'd find much more compelling data if you looked for studies comparing non-traumatic arrests. – Carey Gregory Dec 20 '19 at 16:24
